Kage-no-onna (the woman of shadow)

In Toyama Prefecture, don't be alone at dusk — Kage‑no‑Onna may appear. The spirit of widow Yumi, who died in a fire, hunts lonely people, manifesting as distorted shadows and whispers. Victims become weak‑willed shadows; she takes their form.

Kage-no-Onna — The Woman of Shadows.

In the mountain villages of Toyama Prefecture, a warning is passed down from generation to generation: **never stay alone at dusk. ** Especially if you feel that the shadows from the trees have become too long and dense. This means that Kage-no-Onna has gone hunting.

History:

Long ago, in the Edo era, there was a woman named Yumi who lived in a small mountain village. She was beautiful, but she was lonely, as her husband had died in the war and she had no children. Yumi found solace in paper dolls called *kagamibishi*, and she spoke to them as if they were members of her family. One night, a stranger in a black kimono knocked on her door and asked for shelter. Yumi let him in, fed him, and put him to bed. But in the middle of the night, the stranger attacked her. In a desperate struggle, Yumi grabbed a knife and stabbed him, but the blade hit an oil lamp. The house caught fire, and the stranger burned to death. Yumi tried to escape, but she was choked by the smoke. But her heart was not at peace. Before she died, Yumi whispered, «If I could not protect myself in the light, then let the shadows protect me.» And her spirit merged with the shadows of the burning house. This is how Kage-no-Onna was born.
